Tapping Into the Skills Needed to Help You Dream Big
When Jane and I first started Queen Bee, we brought a fair old number skills to the table. Over a decade each in marketing, communications, PR and advertising! However, launching and growing a brand-new business wasn’t one of those skills…and it’s been an exciting, if somewhat terrifying, journey to learn the skills we need to help us grow.
As we plan the exciting next chapter for Queen Bee, and begin to embark on our Dream Big plans for growing our business and unlocking some of the potential we know we have inside us…we wanted to touch upon the importance of skills in helping you realised your big dream.
1. Assembling a Crack Team
While you may be the CEO, PR and tea lady in your business, don’t feel tempted to wear all the hats. Sometimes it’s important to accept that you don’t have the skills and seek out those who do. Early on we recognised our own limitations, and researched the best accountant, IT support, web designer, that could help us realise our business dreams.
As our relationship with these trusted suppliers of skills has grown over the years, we have begun to tap into their experience and ask for their advice where appropriate.
Your crack team doesn’t need be a team of traditional employees, but they do need to share your vision! Our advice is to seek out your tribe of like-minded, passionate, committed people and make the most of this rare breed when you find them.
2. Never Stop Upskilling
A thirst for knowledge doesn’t have to be time consuming or expensive. Jane and I are avid consumers of free webinars, lives, stories or You Tube videos, that let us dip our toes into lots of different subjects that may (or may not!) be the key to unlocking the skills we need to Dream Big.
A typical pattern of ours, is that once we have found a skill we want to develop further (using the methods above), we will invest some time and money to make those skills stick. Usually through an online course, 1-2-1 training with someone who knows their stuff, or even business coaching.
There have also been other times, when we’ve found the best way to learn is just to dive in and take a chance. By throwing ourselves in at the deep end and keeping on swimming, whatever happens, we’ve learnt the quickest.
3. Be Smart
While it can be good to know the basics of how to do something, it is even savvier to know when to hand it over to someone else to implement! Just because you can create a website or schedule your social media, doesn’t mean you should. There might be someone else out there you can do it quicker than you can, better than you can and add value in ways you never even thought of.
Like us, I’m guessing you started your business because you love doing what you do, but so much of being a small business owner is time spent doing other things. Value your time [link to time blog when live], because if you don’t, it will be impossible to get off that hamster wheel and give yourself the time you need to achieve your dreams. Trust us, we’re speaking from experience!
We’re off now - to assemble our Avengers, take in a few webinars, and hand over a few tasks to our freelancers. After all, we’ve told you all we’re Dreaming Big for 2021 and we need to get our skates on if we want to make that a reality.
Next time, we’ll be sharing the next tool in our Dream Big toolbox…support! It’s time to be accountable 😊
